Building A Subscription List, Part 1

by Adrian Key

If you are like me, a regular user of Ezemail’s email marketing solution, then you will probably already appreciate the value of a newsletter as a part of your email marketing strategy. They make the ideal medium for keeping your existing customers informed of new developments in your business and for announcing special promotions that you are running.

You probably are also well aware that a newsletter can be an excellent tool for capturing and keeping the attention of potential customers that are interested in your products or services but are currently not ready to purchase from you.

But here’s the bottom line. For any newsletter to work you first need a list of loyal and responsive subscribers to send it to. So how do you start to build a list of subscribers for any newsletter?

The fact of the matter is that most people when looking to build a newsletter subscription list don’t know where to start. So imagine what it would be like if you could generate a huge list of targeted subscribers for free using only your own web site and those visitors that already come to it.

In this article, we will reveal six tips that can be applied to any web site very quickly and will start to gain new newsletter subscribers for you immediately.

Tip 1: Advertise your newsletter subscription on every page

People visit your web site every day and browse its pages to look at what your business has to offer. But the harsh reality is that most will quickly leave your site without making a purchase. They might make themselves a promise to come back soon; but the reality is that as time passes by most will forget all about you.

Stop! - Don’t let visitors leave your web site with nothing. Give them every opportunity to remember you and keep in touch by including a prominent link to your newsletter subscription page on every page of your web site.

Tip 2: Provide people with good reasons to subscribe

One of the biggest problems to building a newsletter subscription list is that the Internet is full of scams and most of them involve obtaining email addresses from people under false pretences. As a direct result, people are very reluctant to give someone their personal details.

When encouraging people to sign up to your newsletter, it is therefore very important that you build up trust. Always tell potential subscribers exactly what they are going to get from your publication and how often they will receive it from you. And once you have decided on the theme and frequency of your newsletter, make sure you stick to it.

Tip 3: Offer a legitimate bribe

The more incentives you offer a potential subscriber, the more likely they are to subscribe. Giving away related bonus products for free that a subscriber can use in return for their personal details is therefore an excellent way to build any list.

Bonuses might include a free e-book or a “money of next purchase” voucher. Whatever bonus you offer, there must be a value of some kind attributable to it.

Always remember to make sure that you highlight prominently on your subscription page what bonuses a subscriber will get, how they will receive them and what value they represent.

As you read every word of this article, you begin to appreciate how easy it is to turn people who are already visiting your web site into loyal subscribers for your newsletter.
